Julian Corbett and the Functions of the Fleet in Winning Wars/ LTC Thia Shan Zhi

Singapore Armed Forces2026
Book
Julian Corbett defined the function of the fleet as three-fold: to support or obstruct diplomatic efforts, to protect or destroy commerce, and to further or hinder military operations ashore. In this article, the author argues that the fleet’s function in furthering or hindering military operations ashore is arguably the most important for winning wars. This article will thus delve into how the fleet achieves this furtherance or hindrance in direct and indirect ways, before exploring how the other two functions of the fleet that Corbett put forward have contributed significantly to the goal of “winning wars”, but are unable to achieve that goal in isolation.
