For example, we create and develop combat teams to perform the tactical actions required in combat and command teams at all levels to perform the critical function of command and control during operations. In peacetime, we create project teams and working committees to perform tasks that further enhance the saf’s organizational effectiveness in the areas of human resource and organizational structure optimization, technological development and implementation, and organizational culture and learning. the objective of this article is threefold. first, the concept of sensemaking is examined. second, some of the pitfalls that may affect the quality of the collective sensemaking process are discussed. finally, a number of recommendations to mitigate the effects of these pitfalls are proposed. To address the challenging issue of attracting talent to fill up the SAF’s ranks and succession in the years to come, analysts stress the importance for organisations to pursue human resource (HR) strategies that focus on increasing staff amotivation and retention. The usage of metallurgy in modern militaries appears to be devoid of a central essence and is often more a means to an end. Metallurgy works in binary terms; they either destroy or are destroyed, which does not reflect reality and nature’s principles of growth and self-healing. However, the pursuit of biomimicry utilises innovative materials that injects life-like qualities into a weapon. This evolutionary bio-design is present in nature, not as a collection of parts but as a synthesis of a whole. As such, biomimicry may be a paradigm shift after metallurgy, in line with the humanity’s quest of zealous discovery and technological advancement. It is the product of more than 35 years of study and teaching of military history in various institutions of learning in the United States. Archer Jones traces history from about 2,500 years ago, when the Greeks and Macedonians first supplemented their spears with missiles (slings, arrows, and javelins) and carries it to our time, where missiles are the ultimate weapon. Yet, Jones demonstrates that military tactics have changed very little although weaponry may have increased a thousand-fold since the Spartans battled the Thebans in the fourth century B.C. In his thorough description of the Israeli-Egyptian War of 1973, for example, he shows how tactics and strategy sometimes paralleled those employed by Caesar at Ilerda and by the Germans in their 1940 offensive. The Art of War in the Western World is a book that is likely to stand for a generation as the standard work on how men conduct war. -- SAF Professional Reading Programme, 3rd edition, Dec 2003. But is it for the better? Amid a chorus of doomsayers, Clive Thompson delivers a resounding "yes." The Internet age has produced a radical new style of human intelligence, worthy of both celebration and analysis. We learn more and retain it longer, write and think with global audiences, and even gain an ESP-like awareness of the world around us. Modern technology is making us smarter, better connected, and often deeper-both as individuals and as a society. In Smarter Than You Think Thompson shows that every technological innovation-from the written word to the printing press to the telegraph-has provoked the very same anxieties that plague us today. We panic that life will never be the same, that our attentions are eroding, that culture is being trivialized. But as in the past, we adapt-learning to use the new and retaining what's good of the old. Thompson introduces us to a cast of extraordinary characters who augment their minds in inventive ways. There's the seventy-six-year old millionaire who digitally records his every waking moment-giving him instant recall of the events and ideas of his life, even going back decades. There's a group of courageous Chinese students who mounted an online movement that shut down a $1.6 billion toxic copper plant. There are experts and there are amateurs, including a global set of gamers who took a puzzle that had baffled HIV scientists for a decade-and solved it collaboratively in only one month. Smarter Than You Think isn't just about pioneers. It's about everyday users of technology and how our digital tools-from Google to Twitter to Facebook and smartphones-are giving us new ways to learn, talk, and share our ideas. Thompson harnesses the latest discoveries in social science to explore how digital technology taps into our long-standing habits of mind-pushing them in powerful new directions. Our thinking will continue to evolve as newer tools enter our lives. Smarter Than You Think embraces and extols this transformation, presenting an exciting vision of the present and the future. This book explores the border-crossing features of such wars by bringing together insights from international relations theory, sociology and transnational politics with a rich comparative-quantitative literature. It highlights the causal mechanisms - framing, resource mobilisation, socialisation, among others - that link the international and transnational to the local, emphasising the methods required to measure them. Contributors examine specific mechanisms leading to particular outcomes in civil conflicts ranging from Chechnya, to Afghanistan, to Sudan, to Turkey. Transnational Dynamics of Civil War thus provides a significant contribution to debates motivating the broader move to mechanism-based forms of explanation, and will engage students and researchers of international relations, comparative politics and conflict processes"-- Provided by publisher. Klingaman. https://saftimi.spydus.com.sg/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/WPAC/BIBENQ?SETLVL=&BRN=29712 The concept of operational art was added to U.S. Army doctrine in the mid-, 1980s. It is intended to provide a bridge between the complex, ethereal, and many times ambiguous national strategic aims, and the relatively mechanical, straightforward, and scientific execution of tactical actions. It is called 'art' because it demands creativity and vision. As the contemporary operating environment becomes more complex, the requirements for 'good art' increase. Unfortunately, the U.S. Army Officer Education System (OES) does not use any education methods specifically formulated to teach art. The ongoing transformation of the OES does not offer a good solution. In fact, the competency-based learning model recommended in Cubic Applications Intermediate Level Education Needs Analysis might be a step in the wrong direction, especially regarding education of operational practitioners. Another solution may exist. The late Doctor Donald A. Schon, former Ford Professor of Urban Studies and Education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology established a theory for how art is successfully taught. He called his resulting method "reflective practice." This monograph examines reflective practice and advocates it as a method for teaching Army Majors the operational art. The monograph conducts this analysis of reflective practice in the context of the ongoing transformation of Command and General Staff College (CGSC), largely driven by the Cubic Applications analysis and recommendations. The monograph concludes that reflective practice should be incorporated into the curriculum at CGSC, and makes several recommendations in that regard. The Art of War in the Western World is a book that is likely to stand for a generation as the standard work on how men conduct war." -- SAF Professional Reading Programme, 3rd edition, Dec 2003. Key findings are: 1) recent PLA exercises and operations point to an increasing interest in developing expeditionary naval capabilities and a presence in distant seas, suggesting that a move beyond the current "near seas" focus is both possible and an extension of existing efforts; 2) PLA ground force exercises -- rather than aiming to intimidate others by demonstrating the ability to project power beyond China's borders -- focus on moving military power within China, both to defend China's borders and perhaps as a prelude to military restructuring in which smaller but more mobile formations could replace larger and more static ones; 3) through its participation in international military exercises as well as peacekeeping operations and humanitarian aid and disaster relief missions, the PLA is gaining greater capabilities to deploy outside of China's borders for a variety of missions; and, 4) PLA operations are increasingly supported by a modern, civilian-integrated military logistics network, though a lack of overseas bases continues to limit the effectiveness of this network as it pertains to overseas power projection capabilities.
