The SAF’s Strategic Response to Mpox: Lessons in Operational Readiness and Public Health Preparedness/ LTC (Dr) Jake Goh Kit Khong

Singapore Armed Forces2025
Book
Mpox, a highly contagious disease that spreads from animals to humans, presents unique challenges for militaries due to its rapid transmission and potential to disrupt operations. In response to the global mpox outbreaks in 2022 and 2024, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) developed a phased approach to safeguard personnel and ensure mission readiness. A cornerstone of the SAF’s response was its close collaboration with Singapore’s Ministry of Health, which enabled effective data sharing, coordinated vaccination efforts, and integration with national public health measures. This paper reviews the SAF’s adaptive mpox response, showing how tailored military strategies and strong partnerships with public health agencies contribute to a flexible and resilient approach to managing infectious diseases. These insights can serve as a model for other military and public health organisations in preparing for future infectious disease threats.
