“Operational art” – the grey area between strategy and tactics – has been a much-debated concept since it entered the Western military lexicon more than four decades ago. If the concept is indeed crucial on the battlefield and central to the profession of arms for military commanders, we ought to have more clarity on the concept. To that end, this paper addresses the following areas: 1) the origins of operational art and what it is; 2) the perceived issues and criticisms of this concept; 3) how relevant it is to modern warfare; and 4) how we can make it clearer and more intuitive for warfighters to apply.
